CAREER SUMMARY
Alan has over 20 years experience in complex public and private corporate finance
entities directing large operations and generating successful turnaround situations
within minimal time. He has had quantifiable success in strategic analysis and
planning of a broad range of real estate development, business development, corporate
acquisitions, and large scale master planning. He has a diverse background
as both a Chief Financial Officer for an international public commercial real
estate firm, as well as, the President and Chief Investment Officer for a commercial
investment fund.
Most recently he was the former President & Chief Investment officer for
a commercial investment fund in excess of $400 million. The fund focused on development
and large scale mix-use master planning requiring strategic planning through public/private
partnerships, as well as, joint ventures (one of which included International
Paper, one of the largest land owners in the United States). While managing the
fund he worked extensively with the City of Aurora, Colorado on a 500+acre final
development plan requiring a quasi-governmental bond issuance which was sold to
an institutional client 120 days after acquisition for a $7 million dollar profit.
He has worked on multiple mixed-use master planned developments throughout the
southeast, all including national office and retail tenants. He has worked with
property-to-end users such as Bass Pro, Target, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart, and Lend Lease.
While serving as Chief Financial Officer for Insignia/ESG, an international commercial
brokerage and financial services firm based in New York, he was responsible
for commercial operations, corporate acquisitions, SEC reporting and finance,
whose divisions included approximately 200 indirect reports. During his 17 year
tenure with Insignia he served in numerous roles managing operations, national
administration, corporate services, property accounting, facilities management,
human resources and information technology, which provided him the opportunity
to be the executive lead for a $6 million technology consolidation.
While at Insignia/ESG, Inc. his work in mergers and acquisitions involved acquiring
over 25 companies and 10,000 employees national and internationally. Alan later
worked closely with CB Richard Ellis during CBRE’s acquisition of Insignia.
CONSULTING ACTIVITIES
Alan has spearheaded numerous consulting and strategic counseling assignments,
working on large scale mixed-use master planning assignments as well as securitizations
and bond issuances for public/private partnerships. He has worked directly with
numerous institutional clients such as Lehman Bros, Legg Mason, ING, Lend Lease,
MetLife, and Prudential. In addition, he has worked directly with high net worth
individuals in an advisory role with deal structure, highest and best use analysis/implementation
and acquisition and disposition of both leasehold and fee title. Alan has consulted
for clients on both corporate and debt restructures while securing $500+ million
in equity and debt.
His public sector experience includes city and state level, as well as, previous
work with HUD and Fannie Mae.
EDUCATION, PROFESSIONAL COURSES, AFFILIATIONS
Alan received a B.A. in Business Administration, with major emphasis in Accounting/Finance
and a minor emphasis in Economics from Furman University, Greenville, South Carolina.
Alan has completed numerous certifications and symposiums through both Wharton
and Harvard Business School. Moreover, he is a licensed broker-in-charge in
South Carolina, a candidate for a Certified Commercial Investment Members (CCIM),
and has membership in the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).
He has served on sundry community and trade boards and continues to maintain
a leadership position with the Urban Land Institute (ULI) whose mission is to
provide leadership in the responsible use of land while creating and sustaining
thriving communities worldwide. In addition to his position as treasurer at the
state level for ULI, he also is a founding member of the South Carolina Center
for Sustainable Leadership.
Alan is currently the Chief Operating Officer of The Furman Co., Inc. and is
also the Executive Vice President | Managing Principal of The Furman Co., Investment
Advisory Services, a division of The Furman Co., Inc. (South Carolina’s oldest,
and considered by many, as the most prestigious and comprehensive commercial real
estate firm). Founded in 1888, The Furman Co. has a long history of being instrumental
in the recruitment and development of new business and industry in Upstate South
Carolina.
